All About Chikankari

All About Chikankari

Chikankari is a traditional craft that finds its origins in the city of Lucknow, India. Through centuries, partitions, revolutions and industrialisation, Chikankari embroidery is one such craft that’s stood the test of time and is widely known for the sheer versatility of motifs.

What is Lucknowi Chikankari?

Its the finest hand embrodiery introduced to India by Mughals, creating poetry on fabric. It draws inspiration from nature, featuring motifs of flowers, tress, leaves, and birds. Over time, this art form also incorporated Mugal architectural designs like jhalli work (delicate net effect). Often Chikankari comes with other embellishments like Mukaish Work, which is done by pulling a metallic wire through the cloth and then flattening it.

What is the process involved in creating this magic on fabric?

Handcrafted Chikankari is a slow process. First outline is hand block printed on the fabric, then artisans does hand embroidery on it. Further its washed and naturally bleached at dhobi ghat. Finally the finishing work is done by removing the extra threads before it reaches the customer. Thus making it little expensive.

How to identify Authentic Vs Fake Chikankari?

The real chikankari will have loose threads in the reverse side and pattern will look slightly different than in front. These imperfections shows human involvement. However, machine work will have perfect finishing on the reverse side also.

In 2008, Chikankari received Geographical Indication GI tag, which recognizes and protects its origin and unique characteristics.
